Hello, we are professional Shiba Inu breeders.
Today, we’d like to introduce you to the fascinating history of “small dogs,” a category that includes our beloved Shiba Inus.
Though they may be small in size, these dogs have played significant roles throughout human history—and their story is as deep as it is heartwarming.
■ Small Dogs Have Been By Our Side Since Ancient Times
Dogs began living alongside humans around 15,000 years ago, during the Paleolithic era.
Among them, small dogs were already seen as special companions from an early stage. In ancient Egypt, small or short-legged dogs were depicted in wall paintings and included as burial items around 2,000 B.C., showing that even back then, they held a role as companions rather than just working animals.
In ancient Rome, aristocrats adored what were called lap canis—“lap dogs.” As the name suggests, they were beloved pets who sat on their owners’ laps. These dogs weren’t only cute—they served practical purposes as well, such as keeping their owners warm like a living hot water bottle in the colder seasons.
Small dogs have long been close to the human heart—both emotionally and practically.
■ Shiba Inus Have Been Close to Humans for Centuries in Japan
Our Shiba Inus are also a part of this long lineage of small dogs. In fact, bones similar to modern Shiba Inus have been unearthed from Jomon-period ruins in Japan—dating back several thousand years.
At that time, people lived by hunting and gathering, and small hunting dogs like Shibas were essential partners in chasing down small animals in the forests and mountains. Their agility, intelligence, and loyalty allowed them to work seamlessly with humans—traits still very much alive in Shiba Inus today.
Now, Shiba Inus are recognized worldwide as a treasured native Japanese breed. Their small size, quiet nature, and independence make them ideal for living in modern homes, especially in urban areas.
■ Small Dogs Have Played Many Roles Throughout History
While the image of small dogs today often focuses on their cuteness or affectionate nature, historically they have served a wide range of purposes.
For example, Pekingese dogs were kept in ancient Chinese palaces and were regarded as sacred protectors that warded off evil. In medieval Europe, small dogs were used to hunt rats and served as watchful guardians of the home.
Likewise, Shiba Inus started out as practical hunting dogs but gradually became trusted family members and beloved companions over time.

■ Shiba Inus: Heirs to a Rich Tradition of Small Dogs
The Shiba Inus we raise today carry the legacy of thousands of years of companionship between humans and small dogs.
They are not just cute pets—they are trusted partners who bring comfort, protection, and joy to our lives.
From their expressive faces to their strong bonds with owners, Shibas embody the very essence of what small dogs have always been: faithful, close to humans, and full of heart.
In our next blog post, we’ll take a deeper look at how Shiba Inus share traits with small dogs around the world, especially their ancient roles and how those instincts are still present today.
