[From Japan to the World] The History and Charm of the Shiba Inu

Why is the Shiba Inu loved all around the globe today?

Hello and welcome!

We are Shibainubreeders.jp, professional breeders dedicated to Japan’s iconic Shiba Inu.

Today, we would like to share the roots of the Shiba Inu, a breed with over two millennia of history, and how it has evolved into the beloved companion we know today.

The Shiba Inu is not just a “cute dog.”

It is a living tradition that has been carefully preserved within Japanese culture.

🏞️

Origins: More than 2,000 Years Ago

The ancestors of the Shiba Inu trace back over 2,000 years to ancient Japan.

They hunted side by side with humans, helping to flush out small game in the mountains and forests.

With their compact size, quick movements, and unwavering loyalty, they became invaluable partners for hunters of the time.

Regional Variations of Early Shiba

Different regions of Japan produced slightly different types of small hunting dogs, adapted to their environment:

  • In western Japan (San’in region): sturdier, well-built dogs

  • In Nagano (Shinshu region): double-coated dogs resistant to cold

  • In Gifu (Mino region): smaller, agile dogs

All were primarily used as hunting companions.

⚠️

Near Extinction in Modern Times

With the influx of Western breeds in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the native Shiba population declined drastically due to crossbreeding.

There was a real fear that the true Japanese dog might vanish forever.

This concern sparked preservation efforts.

The Role of NIPPO and National Treasure Status

In 1932, the Nihon Ken Hozonkai (NIPPO – Association for the Preservation of Japanese Dogs) was founded to protect these native breeds.

Its mission includes:

  • Maintaining pedigree records

  • Promoting preservation and breeding

  • Organizing exhibitions and judging shows

  • Sharing knowledge with the world

In 1936, the Shiba Inu was officially designated as a Japanese Natural Monument, symbolizing recognition of its cultural and natural significance.

“Aka-go”: The Foundation of the Modern Shiba

At the heart of Shiba restoration was one particular dog: Aka-go, born in the early Showa era.

Aka-go descended from “Ishi-go” of Shimane and “Koro-go” of Shikoku, and played a central role in shaping the breed.

From Aka-go came descendants such as “Aka Ni-go” and “Beniko-go,” leading eventually to “Chu-go,” who solidified the modern Shiba Inu standard.

Most Shiba Inu around the world today carry Aka-go’s bloodline.

The Ideal Shiba Face

According to NIPPO, the ideal Shiba Inu facial features include:

  • Rounded, full cheeks

  • A relatively short, tight muzzle

  • A distinct “stop” (indentation) between forehead and nose

This creates a calm, dignified expression blending gentleness and strength.

A Global Favorite, Rooted in Japanese Spirit

In 1992, the Shiba Inu was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC).

Since then, it has gained worldwide popularity in Korea, Europe, and beyond.

Yet, its true essence lies in the Japanese spirit of harmony with nature and loyalty to humans, preserved carefully by dedicated breeders.
